A really brief background!
Hippocrates (known as the Father of Medicine) in the 5th century observed that people got better by using “similars”. Paracelsus (known at the Father of Chemistry) also highlighted the “similars” principle – or “like cures like”. However, these ideas died out except for Country or Folk people using their own version of the above and it was not until Samuel Hahnemann (1755) that this principle was once again brought to light.
Dr Samuel Hahnemann is now known as the “Father of Homeopathy”, his work on researching, testing and recording how people reacted to remedies produced from minute doses of things known to produce the same illness in a material dose, is now one of our anchors in Homeopathy. Hahnemann recorded these reactions and today we work with Materia Medica and a cross-referenced book of the Materia Medica called Repertory to help us find the right remedy when all we have are symptoms!
Dr Quin was the doctor that introduced Homeopathy to the UK, he caught cholera during the 1831 worldwide epidemic and was cured using Homeopathy. Between then and now, Homeopathy has seen both upsurges and downsurges in popularity, at the moment, it is enjoying an upsurge as we are all more aware of the chemical pills we take, and the side-effects they have – hence we are looking for more natural things to help us overcome our ailments.
Your first appointment and follow-up appointments
As you are a unique individual – your physical and emotional make-up is different to everyone else, in order to match the correct remedy to YOU – and there are thousands of Homeopathic remedies – we need to narrow the field!
A Homoeopath takes into account your family history, your own history and any major events in your life. I will ask you all about the symptoms you need help with – how they started, when they started and how they affect you. I will also ask you about any medication you are currently taking.
You are then given a remedy and after taking the remedy we ascertain your reaction and then progress from there, it may be sticking with the same remedy, changing the potency or changing the remedy – it all depends on you!
Working together...
Homeopathy is about working together towards a joint goal – an improvement in your health. In most cases (but not all), you did not get sick overnight – it does take time to rebuild your defences, but it is time well spent and will pay you dividends in the long run and enhance your quality of life.
